Memorial Day

Picture 1

National Concert on the West Lawn tonight.

Arlington National Cemetery tomorrow.

Why? Because I’m lucky enough to only have one I need to say goodbye to.
But there’s an awful lot of people I need to thank.

We all do.

Where’d you get that last picture? It’s weird but great.

  2. Niall says:

No, I meant the other picture. With the girl in bed watching television.

The picture is from that report.

Here’s the link to the picture itself, which is part of a larger slideshow included in the first link.

More importantly, here’s the write-up for the picture…

“The night before the burial of her husband’s body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of “Cat,” and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. “I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,” she said. “I think that’s what he would have wanted.”

Thanks. I couldn’t tell whether the picture was real or photoshopped.

Spending one last night (vigil) over the body of a loved one is one of the most ancient burial rites known to man.
